Read & Review by Jan (Local Librarian); This is the first book I’ve read in the ‘Adventures on Trains’ series (but the third in the series) and I will definitely be recommending it to children to read. It won’t matter if you haven’t read the other two earlier books, you can still enjoy this one.

Hal is excited to be heading to South Africa with his Uncle Nat to travel on the luxurious ‘Safari Star’ train all the way from Pretoria to magnificent Victoria Falls. He’s looking forward to spotting and drawing some wild African animals. But right from the start, Hal notices a man acting suspiously before they even board the train, and then a passenger is found dead in his cabin. Can Hal use his amazing detective skills to solve this mystery?

I enjoyed the fact that you are kept guessing right till the end as to what really happened on the train. Every time I thought I’d worked it out, something else came along to challenge my idea.

As a bonus, if you are a train lover, there is information about the model of train within the story, but again, you wouldn’t have to like trains to find this an interesting and absorbing read.

Journey to Southern Africa in another high-stakes Adventures on Trains mystery from bestselling authors M. G. Leonard and Sam Sedgman.
